Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A speeding unidentified vehicle hit four pedestrians on National Highway 512 in Malda’s Devtala area early Wednesday morning, killing three on the spot and leaving one critically injured. The incident took place around 5:30 AM in Hiyakhor village when several locals were heading to Gazole—some to sell fish and others to buy vegetables. The vehicle, moving towards Gangarampur, struck them at high speed and fled the scene.
The deceased have been identified as Nizamuddin Sheikh (55), Lalit Bhuimali (60), and Shamsuddin Sheikh (60), while Altaf Hussain (42) sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Malda Medical College Hospital. Police from Gazole station reached the spot, recovered the bodies, and shifted them to Gazole State General Hospital for post-mortem. Authorities have launched an investigation to track the vehicle and are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas.
The accident has triggered shock and grief in the region, with locals demanding stricter traffic monitoring on NH-512. Police are questioning eyewitnesses and nearby residents to gather information about the hit-and-run vehicle. No arrests or identifications of the vehicle have been made so far.
